About Thomas Scheffler

I am an author, lecturer, and political analyst with a special focus on Middle Eastern affairs and comparative politics. The holder of a summa cum laude PhD (Free University of Berlin, 1993), my academic journey has led me from teaching and research positions at universities in Germany, the USA, and Denmark to Lebanon, where I have worked for almost twelve years as a research associate at the German Orient-Institut Beirut (1996-99, 2009-15) and as a long-term guest professor of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at Saint-Joseph’s University, Beirut, and Notre Dame University–Louaizé, Zouk Mosbeh (2008-09). My research areas include: religion, violence, and political order; interreligious dialogue and conflict management; communal identities and the construction of political space; German-Middle Eastern relations; and the history of Oriental Studies.
