Thomas Scott Email and Phone Number
I am a mechanical engineering student focusing on computational engineering with an interest in high-order, finite-element methods, machine learning, and optimization. As the 2023 Livermore Lab Foundation's John S. Foster Undergraduate Fellow, I worked on machine learning and optimization projects relevant to national security. I am actively pursuing reinforcement learning methods for high-order mesh optimization as undergraduate research and I have worked on commercial flight dynamics problems in industry. Outside of academics and work, I run a student organization that develops unique and high-performance rocket engines for international collegiate competitions while promoting early career development, diversity, and inclusion in aerospace engineering.

Defense InternLawrence Livermore National Laboratory May 2023 - Aug 2024Livermore, California, United StatesPerformed model validation for the new Direct Laser Impulse (DLI) chamber at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Wrote a plugin for an internal tool to perform parallelized parameter exploration of hydrocode results, biasing regions matching known experimental results through Bayesian Optimization. Wrote a Graphical User Interface in Python to view Gaussian Process (GP) surrogate model results and vary parameters in real time.Worked alongside the Defense Science and Technology Internship (DSTI) program over the summer, supported by the John S. Foster Jr. Undergraduate Fellowship from the Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF). -
PresidentStudent Space Technology Association May 2023 - Jun 2024Knoxville, Tennessee, United StatesPresented information about rocketry and aerospace engineering to various outreach events focused on targeting diversity in engineering, prospective engineering students, and young children not yet exposed to engineering.Revised recruitment strategies, leading to a significant gain in incoming members and member retention. This also involved a restructuring of the new member program, featuring more engaging and challenging projects, such as assisting in preparation of liquid rocket engine hot fires.Reduced assembly cost and improved experience for student members interested in high-power certifications. This involved developing more engaging presentations on basic technical concepts. -
Rocket Engine Development LeadStudent Space Technology Association May 2022 - May 2023Knoxville, Tennessee, United StatesDesigned, directed the fabrication of, then experimentally tested the highest impulse, thrust, and efficiency hybrid rocket motor made at my university since the program began in 1999.Optimized and co-designed the first self-pressurizing liquid rocket engine to be built at my university. This engine featured a unique pyrotechnic valve design.Developed a program in C++ to simulate blowdown of real gas mixtures and calculate chemical equilibrium to perform simulations of integrated flight dynamics and propulsion, aiding in design optimization for hybrid and liquid engines. Inputs are specified through a Python API in a user-friendly manner that other engineers can readily use. -
