Researching student's social thinking for The Excellence Centre at Pacific Hills Christian School. Lecturing in Educational Psychology at Excelsia College, Macquarie Park. I am working with Dr. Anne Knowle to research children and adolescents choice of perspectives when considering problematic social situations. We are using Charles Taylor's moral orders to identify the sources of student's moral thinking. We have just completed a three-year research project with a large number of Year 3 and 7 students to explore their social thinking processes at a basic level. We found that when these students think about problematic social situations, they use Personal Viewpoints (PVs) to express their response. Their PVs appear to be more complex than cognitive thinking. Their viewpoints appear to express moral agency, feelings (implicit or explicit) for the victim and/or the perpetrator, and a moral urge to bring fairness or change to the situation. We inferred from our student’s comments that P Vs are distinct packages of focused thinking/feelings used to express student’s solutions to socially problematic situations. Their PVs usually express support for the integrity of the disadvantaged-other, and an awareness of the moral judgement on the perpetrator. For example, a Year 7 student, responding to a cyber bullying situation scenario, expressed his/her response with the PV: “You are a bully and its not fair for you to bully Zara like that.” When asked why the student would say that the student said: “It might make him feel guilty and realize that the meme is wrong.” I would love to hear from you if you are exploring this area of work.
