Throughout the school year, though mostly before high school final exams for several schools around the Tinley Park area, I conducted office hours for students of various ages (children as young as six years old to seniors in high school). I would help the students with their homework and help them prepare for their academic final exams - primarily focusing on various mathematical and scientific subjects. At times, I would be responsible for a room of on average eight students at a time.

At the laboratory, my job was to handle food products and QC samples that come through the laboratory and prepare them for specific testing for the presence and/or enumeration of particular types of bacteria. I was also responsible for logging in our samples via the company software, validating client paperwork for tests ordered, maintaining controls of all media used on any given day and proper maintenance/cleanliness of the laboratory and its equipment.

My work in this project focused on characterizing the structural difference in two forms of the passenger domain of the YapV autotransporter protein from the pathogenic bacterium Yersinia pestis. This work involved molecular biology techniques (bacterial growth and heterologous protein expression, Site-Directed Mutagenesis, DNA Primer sequencing, PCR reactions and bioinformatics analysis) as well as biophysical techniques (Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy, Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography, Native and SDS-PAGE protein gel analysis). This work was presented on June 13, 2012, at the University of Notre Dame Biochemistry conference (Plymouth, IN).

Within this work, I studied the mechanism of the luminol reaction, the forensic test for latent blood stains. This work was conducted to determine if there is a link between this reaction and the organo-metallic catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide via the Fenton Decomposition Pathway. This research involved the use of UV-Visible spectroscopy, chemiluminescence light emission measurements and statistical analysis. This research was presented on April 10, 2010 at the ACCA Student Symposium at Lewis University (Romeoville, IL). This work was also published: Thomas J. Soderquist, et al, "Evaluation of the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 through use of organo-metallic complexes – A potential link to the luminol presumptive blood test," Forensic Science International. 219, Issue 1-3. I was hired on as a custodial worker, but the bulk of my work was devoted to painting Lockport township schools in Will County District 92. Our projects covered all rooms in the school (including class rooms, bathrooms, offices, and gymnasiums). Besides the actual physical work, I was also in charge of purchasing all materials necessary to do my work. In June 2011, I was promoted to Painting Crew Leader where, aside from physical work, my duties also included assigning painting projects and maintaining a crew of six or more painters on school grounds.

My duties predominately focused on monitoring the store, via the use of CCTV cameras, for individuals who may steal our merchandise. When an individual was observed stealing merchandise, I would either continue to monitor them on the cameras or be sent out to the floor to apprehend the subject and bring them to our security room for questioning and processing. In all cases, the police would be contacted, an incident report would be filed, and evidence would be cataloged (usually a picture of the stolen merchandise as well as video surveillance footage). I could also be called to appear in court as a witness for the prosecution (which did happen on one occasion).

This research opportunity involved the isolation, identification and enumeration of particular species of coliform bacteria found at local recreational water areas. I used the Colilert reagent test to visually detect these bacteria and the Most Probable Number statistical method to determine the number of bacteria present in the water samples. I also isolated and synthesized copies of each bacterium’s 16S rDNA gene using PCR reactions. These samples were sent to the University of Chicago for bioinformatics analysis to identify the bacteria. This research was presented on April 10, 2010 at the ACCA Student Symposium at Lewis University (Romeoville, IL) and on May 25, 2010 at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) national conference (San Diego, CA).

While on my Christmas break of my sophomore year of college, I was hired into the Jewel corporate branch in Illinois to help in a project of maintaining company records. Working in Microsoft Excel and other company specific software, I updated company records for certain stores nationwide (including accounts of store closing, employee numbers per store, job openings, etc.).

As a BZPD safety officer, my main duty was to ensure security for guests at the park. I would be involved in foot patrol of the park, making sure to monitor and report any unsafe or illegal activity. I was involved in emergency services for the injured (including crowd control and emergency dispatch) and enacted safety protocols during times of severe weather or other potentially dangerous circumstances for guests. I also helped lost children return to their loved ones and helped guests retrieve lost items or merchandise (sometimes this may involve stolen property). A great deal of this vocation included handling incident paperwork for all events listed above.
