Director duties include: leadership, administration, financial oversight, organization, human resources, and operational responsibilities within the university environment. I am responsible for all aspects of the Engineering Division at LASP, including its 8 engineering depts. and 43 active flight programs. The division consists of 247 FTEs, 38 student employees, and 130 subcontracts providing services and components for an annual expenditure of $60M. As Director of Engineering at LASP, I report directly to the laboratory director and I am one of five members of the Business Committee that controls and manages the LASP institute. The scope of my responsibilities have included: ensuring that the Engineering Division is meeting the laboratory objectives and following the LASP mission and vision statements; the full financial and budgeting operational responsibilities; directing the overall mission process; defining project scope and specifications; allocating mission resources; establishing change control and documentation methods; monitoring project schedules and activities; facilitating team communication and delivering constructive performance feedback to team members; judging and making critical trade-off decisions essential to the welfare of the Engineering Division and flight projects; and managing and maintaining ~100,000 sq ft. of laboratory and production manufacturing facility space and $68M of equipment. These tasks require regular and timely status reporting, budgetary and financial analysis and reporting, risk assessments, and schedule changes, which are made and discussed with the appropriate stakeholders, vendors, and employee, in order to efficiently facilitate these processes. I play a key role in new business development and federal relations. While at LASP, I have led many major proposal efforts totaling over $1B, with a success rate of >50%. I have also created opportunities greater than $100M, pursuing non-traditional business efforts.
