Taking on a supervisory role presented a significant increase in job autonomy and therefore responsibility. This experience provided an awareness of what it means to lead a team, and it was a position to which I was thoroughly suited. Administratively, I became partially responsible for the allocation of wages, creation of rotas and other miscellaneous, administrative tasks. Practically, I developed an elementary understanding of how to conjure the best performance out of a team, and the pivotal role a leader plays within that. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented an unprecedented, tumultuous set of issues for businesses in general, but the problem is further exacerbated for events and hospitality, by nature of the industry business model. As such, it has been necessary for the company and I to adapt to change to keep the company out of financial trouble, which we have been very successful in doing. Adaptability is a core tenet of business, and I have experienced it and dealt with it first-hand.

In terms of responsibilities, this was a horizontal step in relation to my preceding role. However, this experience assisted in expanding my business knowledge, as the clientele were different in this period than that of my first job. As well as gaining valuable business insight, I was able to consolidate much of the skills I had begun developing previously.

It was as a Customer Assistant at The King’s Arms where I was able to begin my development as an employee. I learnt a host of foundational, but essential and transferable skills during my employment here, such as money handling, health and safety and effective customer service.
