Whilst employed as a Decommissioning Researcher at UKAEA, my role was to research and understand complex subject matter to determine the optimal way to manage wastes generated from fusion reactors. Most of my research is focused on the removal of tritium from tungsten and beryllium which involved international collaboration with foreign laboratories, setting up and undertaking experimental campaigns, analysing and interpreting the outputs and writing and presenting the results. Another duty in this role was to collate and present the teams progress to more senior members of the company at project meetings, and to answer questions on the team’s behalf.

This job fully utilised my MSc in Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management, and I regularly used my knowledge of permitting regulations, waste packaging and radioactive assay to find solutions for waste related issues presented to me by stakeholders. Developing and implementing Waste Action Plans was a key part of the role. I was also involved in the discussion and writing of various BAT studies of varying scales. In my time at AWE, I received internal awards for the waste work I undertook as well as receiving a promotion.

The role had a strong focus on teamwork and customer service, and in the summer of 2016, I was awarded with a prize for my positive attitude, work dress, customer service and team morale.
