Business Unit Manager: Underground Services, Sasol Nitro. This position manages five regional managers and their teams in servicing the underground market in South Africa.

The position, reporting directly to the MD, managed all marketing and sales of shocktube, cord and boosters to a number of distributors in Southern Africa. Sasol Dyno Nobel saw tremendous growth over the 4 years and managing the change in operation and customer focus was challenging. The position also included the management and development of long and short term strategy and reported biannually directly to the board.The position also provided marketing related support for business managers in assisting them in negotiating annual price increases, contract reviews, new contracts and tenders across various business segments while ensuring consistency in contractual clauses and negotiations. The position was also accountable for the competitor sales business with regards negotiations and managing contracts and implementing pricing strategies to ensure price consistency in the marketAs marketing and sales manager I performed all marketing related business functions (market trends, market share analyses and environmental scanning) and ensured that all marketing related activities met the business needs.

In May 2006 the position was revived to coordinate a process for strategy formulation per business area and for sales and marketing overall. The Business Manager is also responsible for African Explosives Ghana Limited quarries distributor, Wileb. Managing all the business aspects to maintain 4 main contracts for the supply of bulk and packaged explosives, initiating systems and technical advice. The position reports directly to the Managing Director in Accra. The remoteness of the position demands the ability to operate independently and with flexibility while maintaining company standards.

Customers include De Beers Central Mines, PPC Lime Quarry, Ulco Cement Quarry, Sishen and Beeshoek Iron Ore Mines, Semancor and AssMang Limited Manganese Mines and numerous diamond operations. Ensuring the smooth running of a 15 man operation including a bulk explosive manufacturing facility, a 1000 Ton AN prill magazine and an explosive depot with a 5000 case / month turnover. Customer assistance in long hole, surface and tunnel designs and blasting legal requirements.

Mining Engineer for AEL’s Smartdet. Study into the effect of milli-second accuracy of detonators. Projects included Union Section Platinum Mine, Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine, Premier Diamond Mine (Slot and Undercut). St Helena Gold Mine.

Mining Engineering Graduate training designed to produce managers for Gold Fields. Experience was mainly gained on West Wits Gold Mines but also spent time on Otjhase Copper Mine (Namibia) and Greenside Colliery. Experience in hard rock development and stoping, conventional and continuous miner room and pillar coal mining, shaft sinking, rock mechanics, mine planning and ventilation.
