Tom Sweeney has recently retired from Eckert Seamans where he maintained a diverse trial practice having tried approximately 100 jury trials to verdict. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Sustaining Member of PLAC. His practice was focused in the areas of product liability defense, commercial litigation, and business counseling on legal/technical engineering issues. He extensive courtroom experience in both state and federal courts and has established a national trial practice, having served as lead trial counsel in more than 40 states and Puerto Rico. He also served as national and regional trial counsel for several firm clients.His trial practice encompassed the defense of automobile, transit bus, locomotive and rail equipment, aviation (fixed wing/rotor craft), industrial machine/equipment and medical device manufacturers.Tom also represented clients in the application of artificial intelligence systems in the autonomous transportation industries This practice involved the defense of advanced safety systems as well as counseling on the implementation of new autonomous transportation technologies. Tom served as Chair of Eckert Seamans Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Autonomous Transportation Systems Group, was a member of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Autonomous Vehicle Policy Task Force as a stakeholder representative for PLAC and was a member of the PLAC AI Group.Tom has also counseled clients in the areas of product safety, risk prevention, and regulatory compliance from product design and development, product release, to post-sale duties. This included product risk assessment, design reviews, compliance with industry standards, advice on warnings, instructions, repair and maintenance manuals, marketing and advertising brochures, product catalogs, safety videos, and website content. Tom regularly spoke on issues involving Autonomous Transportation technologies and AI (including advanced safety and crash avoidance systems), jury trial strategy and tactics, and emerging trends in product liability/commercial litigation.
