Prof. Dr. Dr. Thum is a director at Hannover Medical School, where he heads the Institute of Molecular and Translational Therapeutic Strategies (IMTTS) as well as the Center of Translational Regenerative Medicine. With over 20 years of experience in directing academic and clinical research, he is a recognized authority in the field of noncoding RNA, a novel class of molecules that regulate gene expression and cellular functions.He is also the founder and CSO/CMO of Cardior Pharmaceuticals, a clinical-stage biotech company developing innovative RNA-based therapies for cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of death worldwide. As a serial inventor, he holds more than 200 patents, many of which have been licensed to industry partners. He has published over 450 papers in prestigious journals, including the first paper showing therapeutic efficacy of a noncoding RNA-based approach for cardiovascular disease in Nature. He has received multiple awards and honors for his scientific contributions, such as the Hugo Geiger Award, the William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award, and the German Pfizer-Research Award for Medicine.
