About Thomas Tomich
Tom Tomich joined the faculty of the University of California at Davis in January 2007. He currently is a distinguished professor emeritus in the Department of Environmental Science & Policy. From January 2007 to July 2020, he was founding director of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute; inaugural holder of the WK Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems; professor of community development, environmental science and policy; and an advisor for the new Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Bachelor of Science degree at UC Davis. He also was director of the UC statewide Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) from January 2007 to July 2020. He has broad interests and experience in agriculture, including agroforestry and other farming systems; economic development strategy and policy; hunger and food policy; and natural resource management (trees, forests, land, water, air). Tom has more than 160 publications on these topics and has worked in a dozen countries (Brazil, Cameroon, Egypt, the Gambia, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Peru, Tajikistan, Thailand, and the United States), including significant periods based in Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, and now back in his home state of California.Tom has served on a number of high-level committees and boards, including the Independent Science and Partnership Council of the CGIAR, the Research Committee of AGree (formerly the Initiative on Food and Agriculture Policy); the Advisory Council of the UC ANR Sustainable Food System Initiative; and the editorial boards of the Annual Review of Environment and Resources (ARER) and the International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability. From January 2015, he has served as ARER co-editor. From 1994-2006, Tom was principal economist for the World Agroforestry Centre. Before that, he spent 10 years as a policy advisor and institute associate with the Harvard Institute for International Development and also served as a lecturer in economics and in public policy at Harvard University. Tom was raised on a small family farm growing nearly 100 different varieties of tree fruit in Orangevale, California (near Sacramento).
