Thomas van Nes | Biology Enthusiast | Leiden University graduateHi! I’m Thomas, a recent graduate with a Master’s in Biology from Leiden University. I am passionate about research, particularly in molecular biology, and am eager to apply my skills and knowledge to exciting new challenges.I began my academic journey with a Bachelor's in Biological and Medical Laboratory Research from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, where I developed a strong foundation in both theoretical and hands-on laboratory research. This early experience nurtured my curiosity and solidified my interest in scientific discovery.During my Bachelor’s, I had the opportunity to intern at ErasmusMC, where I focused on investigating Angelman Syndrome, specifically exploring the impact of UBE3A on proteasome activity. This role deepened my understanding of molecular biology techniques and the research process.In my Master’s program at Leiden University, I pursued two internships that further enriched my expertise. My first-year research focused on pollen germination and the role of PDK1 and brassinosteroids in the process, where I refined my time management and scientific writing skills. My second internship revolved around the innovative “Time Machine” system and using RNA for it's application instead of DNA integration, allowing me to develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, cell culture, and advanced molecular techniques.Having recently graduated with distinction (cum laude), I’m currently exploring job opportunities that align with my passion for biological research and innovation. I’m excited about roles that challenge me to apply my academic knowledge while continuing to grow professionally.Outside of the lab, I’m a lifelong learner. I enjoy picking up new skills—whether it’s perfecting card tricks, creating origami, painting, or even coding games. When I’m not working on my hobbies, you’ll likely find me rowing and enjoying the outdoors.I'm passionate about the endless possibilities within the realm of biology and excited to continue my journey, exploring new horizons and contributing to the scientific community.
