Bit Academy is an educational startup, teaching software development for the 21st century.I was part of the team to develop the digital learning environment. Also coaching the student’s myself 1 day a week.In a startup environment, we began with a monolithic Java application running on a single server with MySQL. Developing cool features, gamification and code review systems to enhance student progress. Evolving the system into event-driven services in Kotlin, running on Kubernetes with Postgres. Whilst ensuring a stable learning environment, where classes can continue without any disruptions. And adding an enterprise grade data warehouse, to help drive data driven decisions. Coaching students was a wonderful experience that allowed me to deepen my understanding of various subjects by explaining complex concepts. This time spent coaching also gave rapid feedback on changes done to the learning environment.

Caple is a financial institution that provides loans to businesses in the SME segment. We do this by bridging institutional investors and the small- and medium enterprises. We do this in a transparent and fair way for both the investor and the borrower as we believe that we provide a a social function for the European market.With offices in two European countries (and growning), we work with a small technology team that provides all IT for the organisation. Being a startup, the IT department is left with great freedom to decide which directions to take. It also means that we're working on a 360 degree vision for the company. This is not only about writing high quality software but also about selecting technology partners, suppliers, hardware, infrastructure and all the other IT subjects other companies face too.

At ING I worked as a full stack engineer within the mortgages domain. Where I learned a lot about actually running and maintaining a service in an established and professional way. From what clean code really means to the diligence required to make sure you service is always up for the user.We experimented a lot with different ways of agile working (Scrum, Kanban, Lean). Learning how to safely go from changes going to production in a few weeks to going to production in less than an hour.During this journey we learned how to deal with change management, testing and security in a large corporate environment. We helped the centralized security team develop a maturity model for feature teams within ING. From a legal view this commission is required to verify the student statute every year. Aside from this we chose to also actively pursue other improvements for the HAN University. We did this by actively meeting with other students, starting up polls, etc. Whenever chances for improvement were found we'd send the information to the relevant people within the university which would then be taken into account.

During my time at studentaanhuis.nl (studentathome.co.uk) I helped a lot of people with any and all questions they might have when it comes to computers. These questions varied from cleaning a computer to make it run faster, removing viruses and configuring a wide array of devices. One thing that came up a lot is actually sitting down with someone and carefully explaining something to them, which is also the part of the job I enjoyed the most.
