I was hired for this position to assist in literature review and grant writing for the summer of 2017. This included finding and summarizing literature related to a waterfowl-related water quality proposal in the Lake Mattamuskeet area. I also provided GIS support for the research team, managed spatial data, and created maps and figures as needed for the proposal and future studies. I have also been working on an EPA-funded study that is the source of my dissertation research examining water quality in private drinking water wells in North Carolina and the testing behavior of residents using those wells. To support this research, I digitized hand-written GW-1 forms and georeferenced any that had a valid address using the ArcGIS API. I also mailed informational cards to residents after Hurricane Florence and assisted with the collection of free water quality samples for participants. Over the past 5 years, I have also worked with the Orange County Environmental Health Office to complete a study to promote voluntary water quality testing by residents for coliform bacteria when they are at increased risk of contamination based on the air temperature. This work included designing a letter that communicates information about bacterial drinking water contamination, the risks associated with it, and information about ordering and interpreting a water quality test for residents on private water supplies. Orange County and NC DHHS were consulted on every step of the project, and we had a very successful season of testing and positive feedback from the community in Orange County. The design also involved a detailed GIS selection process to ensure that only residents on private water supplies meeting specific demographic and housing requirements were included in the study by referencing vital records, tax parcel data, and data about public water supplies in Orange County.

Course: Biology 4560, Microbial Ecology with LabThis class was an interdisciplinary research experience for undergraduate students. I was the teaching assistant for the biology section of the class, one of my primary responsibilities was to communicate with team members in the geology and environmental engineering sections of the class to facilitate effective collaboration within project groups. There were four project groups consisting of members from each course section, as a TA, my responsibility was to ensure that all the necessary data was available and help the students in my section to better understand the geology and engineering aspects of the projects. I also advised my students on interdisciplinary research design and methods and guided them as they designed and completed their interdisciplinary class research projects. I also provided GIS and cartography support for the students and additional office hours to assist with statistics carried out in the R software package for this project. This class was part of an NSF-funded study, and I was also responsible for reporting the efficacy of the collaborative research-based teaching methods to the supervising faculty members.

Course: Introduction to ArcGIS Certification, Two-day Professional Certification CourseFor this position, I was the assistant instructor for a training course for ArcGIS culminating in a professional certificate for participants. Prior to the training sessions, I was responsible for completing the exercises and updating the instructions based on any changes that had occurred in the ArcGIS software over the previous year. I was also responsible for checking each computer to ensure the machine and ArcGIS software were functioning properly. During the sessions I was responsible for answering participant questions, troubleshooting any software issues, and providing guidance for the exercises to ensure everyone was able to complete the exercises and understand the material.

Course: HNRS 3002, EC Scholars Research InternshipFor this teaching assistantship, I provided support to students both for course material and data collection. The class was related to community-participatory research projects, and I assisted the students with completing a community-based participatory research study. This included assisting with hydrologic data collection in the field using an acoustic doppler hydroboard and other manual techniques. I also provided GIS support and helped the students better understand and use ArcGIS software. In addition to the field duties, I worked with the students on reading and understanding scholarly research articles and current research methods and answered their questions about the coursework and the research work completed in this class. My other responsibility was to communicate with the supervising faculty about the students' progress and report how well our team was meeting the research objectives of the course designers.

In this graduate assistant position, I opened, closed, and maintained the Kim Computing Lab in the Geography Department. Duties included opening and closing the lab on the required schedule, cleaning and maintaining the room and equipment, and handling administrative work such as scheduling class time in the lab and ensuring the area was empty and ready for the class at the correct time. I was also responsible for answering questions from students about the computers and software as my ability permitted and calling for maintenance/support as necessary for the equipment.

This position was for an administrative graduate assistant for the STEM-Corps East AmeriCorp program at ECU. My main responsibilities included maintaining program records for our past and current team members including their tutoring hours, completion of required and optional training, and completion of required service hours. I also prepared, maintained, and distributed information and documentation materials to all members. I was also responsible for assisting with the organization of any training or community service events occurring while I was employed.

Course: Geography 1000, People, Places, & the Environment In this position, I was the teaching assistant for two sections of Geography 1000. I was supervised by Dr. Beth Bee for the in-person section (contact phone number provided. I also was the teaching assistant for a distance education section of the course, I was supervised by Dr. Karen Mulcahy (now emeritus), her title was Teaching Associate Professor of Geography Planning, and Environment at the time. I was responsible for grading assignments and maintaining the grades for both classes. For the in-person section, I proctored exams and make-up exams when required and showed relevant film material. I maintained office hours to answer student questions about materials, review completed exams and assignments with them, and was available by email to answer any questions from students in both sections.

Course: Global Studies 002, Cultural GlobalizationIn this position, I created maps and figures for class lectures using GIS techniques. I also answered student questions related to coursework and exams. I was also responsible for holding review sessions prior to exams and assisting students with their exam preparation. This included helping to explain concepts of cultural globalization and reading material as well as helping them to understand the exam format and expectations.

I was responsible for compiling water quality data for Oyster Bay in New York from various federal, state, local, and citizen science sources and combining those datasets into a unified database. I performed statistical analyses of these data using R statistical software and ArcGIS. I was also responsible for creating maps and figures for our research group. These maps included land use maps, topography, visualization of the water quality data, and topography in an effort to link contamination with known contamination sources in the area.
