I am currently working as an analytical scientist within pharmaceutical development at AstraZeneca. The position involves working within late phase drug development to get new medicines to the market and to maintain medicines that are already available. I work within drug substance development and I am therefore involved in the development of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) before it is formulated into a product. One aspect of my role at AstraZeneca is the development of robust analytical methods for the testing and release of newly developed drugs. This involves using a range of techniques including but not limited to HPLC, UHPLC, GC, LC-MS, IC, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRF, LC-CAD, Karl Fisher and titration. Once developed these methods then require full validation to be used for the testing and release of API according to ICH guidelines. Within AstraZeneca I have taken a lead role for ion chromatography for the detection and quantification of inorganic species using suppressed conductivity or electrochemical detection. This typically involves the analysis of API counter ions, common inorganic impurities such a chloride or impurities analysis such as the analysis of amines and some mutagenic impurities.Another major aspect of my role is the management of new submissions for a number of already marketed products. This involves the submission of these products into new markets as well the renewal of licenses in some markets. I use my technical knowledge of the projects to answer health authority questions with support from regulatory functions. A part of this role is relating to compliance with pharmacopoeias and ensuring that all monograph updates are monitored such that products are continuously in compliance with the pharmacopoeia.

As a panel member of the SCI young chemists panel I am heavily involved in the organisation and promotion of scientific events to inspire the next generation of professional chemists. I am responsible for the organisation of events from identifying suitable speakers and presentations to finding a suitable venue and organising catering for the day. I am also responsible, along with other panel members, to ensure that all events are well advertised in order to maximise event attendance. All events are aimed at young chemists ranging from school pupils to young professionals and event topics can cover anything related to the chemical sciences.

Working during open days to give people tours and help out in general. A position which helped me develop excellent communication skills and gave me the confidence to present to large audiences. This is a job that tied in excellently with my studies and gave me a chance to welcome prospectus students and their families to the university. I was later employed specifically by the chemistry department to give talks regarding my experience within industry along with tours of the chemistry department.

Studied Chemistry at the University of Leicester with a year in industry at AstraZeneca. Graduated in July 2013 with a first class honours. University experience has taught me excellent communication skills and gave me the technical knowledge I required to begin a career in the pharmaceutical industry. By taking a year in industry I learnt how to apply my knowledge and gained valuable work experience at a leading pharmaceutical company. My fourth year project involved the installation of a TOF mass spectrometer which was then used to investigate the structure of atmospheric species using laser ionisation techniques. In addition this project I also completed an 8 week project within AstraZeneca to investigate the use of the boron doped diamond electrode for the analysis of non-UV absorbing impurities, with a focus on mutagenic impurities.

As an analytical placement student, I gained in depth experience across a range of analytical techniques including but not limited to HPLC, UHPLC, LC-MS, ICP, IC, GC, XRF and NMR. My responsibilities as a placement student involved the development of new methods as well as completing routine batch analysis. I was heavily involved in the ion chromatography and ICP user groups and gained in depth knowledge regarding these and other inorganic techniques. The majority of the projects I worked on were in late phase development and therefore all methods developed required full validation.
