As the Research Assistant to Dr. Meaghan O'Reilly, I built and tested a simulation package that utilised parallel computational techniques to estimate heating effects caused by thermal ablation through use of focused ultrasound near bone tissue in living specimens.

I was awarded an NSERC USRA to work with the SNO+ particle astrophysics research group at Queen's University. I was entasked with exploring the diffusive behaviour of water through an acrylic vessel with the overall aim of providing an estimate for water penetration into the scintillator fluid within.This position afforded me the opportunity to be part of a research group, which was in turn subsidiary to the larger SNOLAB research collaboration.

My first job in Canada was with J.E. Agnew Foods, a franchisee with Tim Hortons. I began working as a Storefront Employee, preparing and serving products for customers. Within 2 years I was promoted to Floor Supervisor, Store Supervisor, and then Assistant Manager. In my third year I was promoted to Store Manager, and managed two locations. Upon attending Queen's University, I occupied a reduced role in the company, working part-time to help pay for school.Working in a coffee shop, and subsequently in management, provided an unexpectedly rich source of experiences. As a Storefront Employee I interacted with customers, prepared products, worked in teams, maintained a clean work area, covered shifts, and was part of a target oriented and high stress environment.The leap into Management brought exponentially more opportunities for learning. Some of the many experiences involved were as follows:- Designing proactive schedules to satisfy diverse requirements for staff and to accomodate for seasonal and events occurring nearby that would influence customer numbers;- Responsibility for inventory management, which resulted in the redesigning and optimization of the inventory system at the store, thereby reducing inventory count times by 75%;- Responding to customer complaints and inquiries, which often required face to face meetings or phone calls, and adaptable diplomacy;- Understanding and maintaining equipment at the store to meet calibration and quality standards.Other experiences included training and mentoring staff, firing staff, making targets applicable and accessible to staff, learning food safety and first aid, reviewing and implementing security measures, money management, and accommodating for unforeseen circumstances. Ultimately I learned the value of leadership, compassion, and understanding, but also the politics of middle management.

After finishing my A-levels at Southend High School for Boys, I spent two years being trained as an Engineer at Olympus KeyMed under the guidance of John Hayter. I learned essential mechanical skills in bench fitting, lathes, mills, electrical and welding. I also toured various departments in the company where I learned about inventory and quality control, process engineering, R & D and manufacturing and prototyping.

My role was to identify stock that was unavailable on the shop floor, cross-check these against an expected stock list, and then attempt to find items in the warehouse that were supposedly out of stock.
