Qualifications for Position:• 30 hours of time at helm across all ferrys• Knowledge of how to operate bilge system • Knowledge of how to operate Fire system • Knowledge of how to operate secondary bilge system • Location of Life saving equipment (first aid, man overboard, fire extinguishers, CO2 pulls, fuel shutoffs)• Operation of GPS and Radar systems• Locating landmarks on Radar system • Execute a Full Trip at the helm (docking and undocking, radio calls, maneuvering in canals/channels)• Execute an instrument only trip across the bay (only using radar and GPS oppose to looking at targets on horizon) Responsibilities:• Training New Deckhands• Second in Command to the Captain of the ferry

At Sayville Ferry Service, my role as a deckhand involved a diverse set of responsibilities, from gaining hands-on experience at the helm to mastering various navigation and operational systems onboard. I was responsible for overseeing freight logistics and ensuring the safe and secure docking of the vessel at each port. My commitment to safety was further strengthened by receiving maritime anti-terrorism training twice from the TSA. Additionally, I maintained detailed trip logs, ensuring accurate and consistent record-keeping of our trips.
