Battalion Logistics Officer (S4), Field Artillery
The S-4 coordinates and manages logistical support for the battalion. The S-4 and forward support company commander conduct joint planning to ensure continuity and integration of logistics throughout operations. The forward support company commander and S-4 host periodic logistics synchronization meetings with commanders, executive officers, and first sergeants to adjust the concept of support and to update logistics requirements, as required. The S-4 has specific responsibilities, which may include:o Advise the commander and staff on sustainment, to include logistics operations, battalion trains concept and positioning.o Monitor ammunition estimates, distribution, and resupply operations.o Monitor transportation requirements and main supply route selection and operation.o Plan non-tactical unit movements.o Prepare logistic estimates and plans using logistic preparation of the battlefield methodology.o Prepare paragraph 4 of the battalion operation order and the logistics support plan or tab, in conjunction with the S-1.o Direct battalion supply and sustainment operations, to include ammunition and refueling.o Monitor distribution operations for classes of supply, except Class VIII within the battalion.o Recommend logistics priorities and employment of S-4 assets that support the commander’s intent and mission accomplishment.o Direct the administrative and logistics operations and battalion support operations, in conjunction with the S-1.o Verify the S-4 section and the BSB support operations officer establish and maintain situational understanding.o Direct administrative movements.o Request maps (digital or paper) for distribution.o Review the battalion’s FS tasks for critical logistic requirements (for example, expeditionary support packages of ammunition or vehicle refuel).
