Head of the Natural Computing Group at Leiden University. In my group, we focus on algorithms for evolutionary and other nature-inspired algorithms and on machine learning and big data analytics. We are very excited about fundamental and applied research and see them as synergetic, since algorithm development often is inspired by challenging applications. Topics of interest in the group include, e.g., benchmarking of iterative optimization heuristics (see IOHprofiler), response surface modeling, efficient global optimization, automated algorithm configuration, multi-objective optimization, constraint handling, mixed-integer optimization, and quantum computing. Applications include e.g. Industry 4.0, Predictive Maintenance, Predictive Quality, Simulation-Based Optimization, Time Series Classification and Forecasting, and automatic learning from simulations. Natural Computing is a field of Computer Science dealing with computational paradigms gleaned from nature. This includes e.g., Evolutionary Computation, Swarm Intelligence, Neural Computation, Fuzzy Systems, Molecular Computing, and related fields. Machine learning and data science are tightly related fields, which are also at the core of our research activities.

In my role as Chief Scientist, I collaborate with colleagues at NORCE in scientific research related to all aspects of evolutionary learning and dynamic learning architectures. This includes methods for self-adaptation, on-line algorithm configuration, efficient nonlinear optimization, and applications of such techniques for real-world problem solving.

divis is specialized in predictive analytics, machine learning and optimization for industries such as automotive, chemistry, consumer goods, manufacturing. We apply the technology to production processes, including predictive maintenance, predictive quality, and process optimization, and to the R&D process including simulation- and experimentation-based R&D (e.g., lab, consumer testing).
