About Thomas Benoit
An avid learner with a desire to grow my expertise in biology-related fields. Personally and professionally, I place a strong value on the effective communication of science and research to the public, stakeholders, and professionals alike.I completed my graduate studies at the University of Ottawa, specializing in microbiology and immunology. My research investigated the essential toolkit used by a bacterial pathogen to disarm host cellular defences and cause disease in humans. My published thesis summarized my research identifying a novel interaction between Salmonella and an essential protein complex in human cells. In a time of increasing rates of antibiotic resistance, a better understanding of important bacteria-host interactions could one day lead to opportunities for new therapeutic discoveries.Previous to my current role, I was responsible for a project at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada seeking to enhance the detection of harmful bacteria in aquatic environments where I designed, executed, and published an investigation of bacterial recovery on growth media from different water sources. This investigation was expanded to a large-scale initiative examining the diversity of hundreds of bacterial samples collected from local waterways. The findings of this research contribute to the enhanced detection and monitoring of environmental pathogens and could lead to improvements in agriculture best practices and public safety.
