About Thomas Berghuis

Thomas is an curator, researcher, teacher and programmemaker specialising in contemporary art, currently working as programmemaker at De Thomas in Amsterdam and invited guest curator Museum Van Loon in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.Thomas holds a PhD in Asian Art History from the University of Sydney, Australia; an Advanced Masters diploma with CNWS, School of Asian, African and Amerindian Studies, part of IIAS (International Institute of Asian Studies), Leiden; and an MA in Chinese Language and Culture from Leiden University, The Netherlands.Following a career teaching and Asian and international art history, curatorial and museum studies at various universities and art colleges in Australia and the Netherlands, Thomas now devotes time outside his curatorial work to teaching in primary schools in his hometown Leiden. As a way to share his international work experiences with society and where it matters most, with severe shortages in primary and secondary school teachers in the Netherlands. Thomas works additional hours completing his fourth degree, a BA in Teaching (PABO) at the Hogeschool Leiden, The Netherlands. Thomas values honesty, freedom, innovation and healthy doses of intellectual inquiries in his work. He practices discursive curating and reseach, involving artists in dialogues and curatorial exchanges, helping them develop new works and conceiving their practices in contexts and spaces that relate decolonial and denational perspectives on art. Clear sense, clear directives and clear timelines are what Thomas values most when working on projects of jobs with others.
