I contribute to the CSA Booster and the 'Responsible Innovation Practices of Sustainable Entrepreneurs in Making the Transition towards Sustainable Agricultural, Water and Energy Systems' project. The CSA Booster develops tools to enhance and secure Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) development and dissemination. The initial phase of the project seeks to identify technological innovations aimed at promoting CSA in Europe, and why these technologies are not being taken up to the required extent by the market. This includes the identification of social and economic barriers, followed by the development of sustainable business models that overcome these barriers. In addition, I have teaching and supervision duties.

This research aimed to learn key lessons relevant to the design of future retrofitting programmes at city scale, by evaluating the outcomes on energy use. By generating around 500 responses to a survey, the links between a wide range of variables – such as attitudes to the environment, awareness of energy use and trust in local government – were explored. The aim was to provide robust evidence on the social, economic and environmental outcomes of city-scale retrofit schemes, to underpin assumptions made in other models and in shaping the design, delivery and expectations about the impact of other schemes, most notably those related to the Green Deal. My role on the project focussed upon analysis of the questionnaire responses using SPSS, and their construction into project outputs, including journal papers.

My PhD research developed a deeper understanding of the current state of efforts to manage GHGEs in supply chains, including the drivers, barriers and activities involved and how they interact; exploring the policy and legislative possibilities was additional aim. Using qualitative methods, an exploratory interview survey of 11 experts from academia, think tanks, business support and consultancy organisations was conducted, followed by interviews with 20 supply chain leading organisations in the public and private sectors. It is found that private sector organisations, driven by factors such as competitive advantage, reputation and risk management are leading current efforts. A wide range of ESCM techniques are utilised and in some instances focal organisations are found to be attempting increasing the capabilities of their supply chains to manage GHGEs. A paradox is found in terms of public sector supply chains, through their high potential contribution towards supply chain GHGE management, yet constrained actions. Using these results, the research constructs an ‘Emission Reduction INtervention Options’ (ERINO) supply chain approach, outlining a range of interventions to enhance management efforts, as well as a ‘Focal Organisations Supply Chain emission Activity/Outcome’ (FOSCAO) matrix, highlighting the relationships between GHGE management activities and outcomes. Finally, a ‘Supply CHain Emission ManagEment’ (SCHEME) overview framework is constructed. It is concluded that current action is reliant on characteristics and capabilities not present within all organisations, meaning wider engagement may require interventions by government or other actors.
  • Defra
    Adaptation To Climate Change Intern
    Defra Apr 2008 - Jun 2008
    Nobel House, London
As part of my MSc I undertook an internship with Defra's 'Adapting to Climate Change' team, during which time I produced a discussion paper based on research into the role of insurance and the insurance industry in communities' socio-economic adaptation to climate impacts. This research was produced from literature reviews and 8 semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, including county councils and other government departments.I was also aided with the construction of a stakeholder/relationship database, the production of evidence reviews, as well as carrying out more general support functions including liaising with other government departments and external bodies.
