About Thomas Bronzwaer

I am a passionate and creative scientific-software developer with experience in constructing and evaluating solutions to complex problems. My software has been deployed by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, which won the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in fundamental physics for producing the first-ever direct image of a black hole.My multidisciplinary background allows me to function well in teams and to communicate easily with different audiences. I love to share my passion for research and science with others: I have extensive experience as a teacher and as an outreach speaker, a I am co-creator of a program that exposes kids of all ages to college-level material, which has been running successfully for 3 years. In my free time, I enjoy producing electronic music, and I am always eager to develop my knowledge and personal skills. You can find some examples of my work in the images and their descriptions below; I've also uploaded some numerical animations to www.youtube.com/tbronzwaer and I maintain a blog at thomasbronzwaer.wordpress.com.

Radboud University Nijmegen Sep 2012 - Sep 2014
I have been TA for many courses, including: general relativity, optics, radiative processes, C programming 1 & 2, numerical methods, calculus 4, statistics, biophysics, famous problems in mathematics, etc.
  • Radboud University Nijmegen
    Research Assistant
Radboud University Nijmegen Mar 2012 - Jul 2013
I built a numerical simulation of radio wave propagation over the Moon's surface. This is connected to Heino Falcke's LRX project, which comprises the design of a radio-frequency antenna that is intended to make astronomical observations in a lunar environment.
  • Usc
    Supplemental Instruction Leader
    Usc Aug 2010 - May 2011
I hosted four weekly, hour-long instruction sessions for students enrolled in PHYS 152 (Electricity & Magnetism). I prepared weekly sheets that contains theory and exercises, and I hosted exam reviews as well (most SI exam review sessions were attended by 100+ students). For more information, see www.usc.edu/si.
  • Information Sciences Institute
    Engineering Intern
Information Sciences Institute Aug 2009 - Dec 2009
As an intern at SERC (Space Engineering Research Center) at the Information Sciences Institute in Marina del Rey, I performed orbital thermal analysis for a CubeSat (microsatellite) project. This involved modeling the spacecraft's geometry and specifying oribtal parameters after which a raytracing algorithm computed the satellite's temperature gradient throughout its orbit.
  • Florida Institute Of Technology
    Research Assistant
Florida Institute Of Technology Oct 2007 - Jun 2008
I was a research assistant for the 'Hurricane House' project; the goal was to model the effects of hurricane-strength winds on common housing structures using a wireless network of pressure sensors.
  • Netherlands Proteomics Centre
    Engineering Intern
Netherlands Proteomics Centre Jan 2007 - Jun 2007
I co-developed mass spectrometry data analysis software in JAVA. Specifically, the software analyzed the enormous output files of high-resolution digital mass spectrometers (dozens of GB) and extracted the useful data, which would usually be a fraction of the raw file that was orders of magnitude smaller in size.
  • Nl Streets
    Translator
    Nl Streets Mar 2006 - May 2007
I translated small advertisements from Dutch to English.
