Dr. Thomas O. Clanton is an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon and sports medicine specialist at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado—the premiere orthopedic facility for sports related trauma and injuries to the joints. He serves as the Director of Foot and Ankle Sports Medicine for The Clinic, and is internationally recognized as a leader in the field. Dr. Clanton received his M.D. degree from Baylor College of Medicine in 1976. He joined The Steadman Clinic in August of 2009 after successfully building his private practice in Houston, Texas for more than two decades.Considered a pioneer in the area of ankle replacement, Dr. Clanton was one of only 10 surgeons in the United States, and the only surgeon in the entire state of Colorado who participated in the FDA Investigational Study of the Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement. He is considered an expert in ankle replacement surgery and has lectured extensively on this subject. Dr. Clanton is also an expert in arthroscopic foot and ankle surgery, and uses this approach for many sports-related, genetic, and degenerative conditions of the foot and ankle. Some of these conditions include syndesmosis, hallux valgus, osteoarthritis, high ankle sprains, Lisfranc injuries, Jones fracture, claw toes, hallux rigidus, turf toe, navicular stress fracture, osteochondritis dissecans of the talus, and osteochondral lesions of the talus.Dr. Clanton oversees the Foot and Ankle Fellowship Training Program at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute where he is the Director of Foot and Ankle Research. He presently serves as the Co-director of the Athletic Training Fellowship Program at The Steadman Clinic in Vail. Associated with treating athletes from a variety of collegiate and professional sports teams, Dr. Clanton was team physician for Rice University for over 25 years, and also served as team physician for the Houston Rockets NBA basketball team and orthopaedic consultant for Houston Texans NFL football team.
