I am the lead in the Groups legal department. I advise the Board on every element of contracts, compliance, commercial and real estate acquisitions, disputes and general legal issues. I project manage all disputes and litigation. The Groups legal department has two parts. There is an in-house arm, providing the usual legal support you would expect for a service company of this size, and a client facing arm, selling the legal services we are very experienced in providing. The legal team generally split their time between the two functions dependant on demand, but in the last 12 months or so the sales side of the department has grown considerably. The legal team includes 3 lawyers, 2 senior management and 3 (plus/ minus) support staff.

The Group's client facing legal functions have been broken out as a stand alone company to allow these legal services to be sold to existing Group clients and other third parties. We already have the expertise and the processes in place, so why not sell them to others? The new firm was the first of its kind in the UK. The firm runs under some of the toughest regulation in the UK (Solicitors Regulation Authority). A stand out project conceptualised and realised by me.

On an invitation from the business owners, I took this role managing the commercial and civil litigation department reporting directly to the business owners.

I ran my own case load of commercial matters and disputes including contractual negotiations, business sale and purchase agreements, asset acquisition and disposal agreements, complex property, contract and commercial disputes, partnership disputes, professional negligence disputes. I was also delegating to and managing other qualified fee earners, trainee solicitors and legal support staff. I gained a wide range of experience in both contentious and non-contentious commercial matters. I was always pleased to take the lead in negotiating whether as part of a dispute or a standard commercial agreement. I was second in the department (below a Director) and played my part in improving billing in the department, expanding the department, contributed to obtaining Lexcel accreditation (a legal industry marque of excellence) and designing efficient in-house procedures. At the request of the Directors I accepted a role overseeing the firms’ new business and marketing. At the request of the Directors I also accepted a role opening and managing a new Branch office the city of Bath.I relocated to Bath for 12 months.

I managed my own time and ran a case load or commercial disputes from qualification. I was responsible for all legal advice, budgeting and achieving my own targets.
