Tom joined Blue Pangolin in 2021 as a Senior Consultant to provide strategic support and evaluation to the wide range of active, and prospective, projects in tandem with expanding Blue Pangolin’s client base. He will work alongside clients to facilitate the realisation of conservation-focused goals by providing technical assistance and expertise on international, national and local scales. In the immediate term, Tom will expand on strong collaborations with Ocean Governance to maintain and animate management assessment tools for marine mammals whilst supporting the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) Secretariat to foster efficacious strategies in ocean finance, system management and international policy, enabling member state’s contribution to global commitments.For the past 5 years, Tom has been operating at the boundary between science and conservation action, developing and delivering international conservation projects for the protection, restoration and sustainable use of coral reefs and associated ecosystems. Working alongside stakeholders and resource managers in tropical settings, Tom has designed, and advised on, real-time solutions for the amelioration of ecosystem services through international collaborations and multi-lateral workflows. Tom’s experience centres around coral reefs and coastal systems, marine spatial planning and ecological monitoring through citizen science-based designs. He has a keen interest in Marine Protected Areas, gender, human capital and the complex social landscape that surrounds artisanal and subsistence fisheries. Monitoring coral reefs, fisheries and establishing MPAs in Indonesia, Philippines and Montserrat (UKOT), has enabled Tom to establish a comprehensive understanding of the ecological and social drivers behind system use and the key role international agreements hold in shaping the protection of the natural world.
