I have spent my career pursuing my passion for electrolytic processes. And by electrolytic processes I mean any process that involves the use of current or potential (voltage) to create chemical changes. So I have worked as a process engineer or a development engineer in electrolytic smelting (aluminum), electroplating (Cu, Ni, Au, Ag and ferromagnetic alloys) for electronic packaging, disk drives, solar cells and MEMS probe cards. I even consulted for a battery company (Enervault) at one point. I have also done related things (if they are associated with an electrolytic process) like chemical etching or cleaning for ultra-high vacuum.I have 28 patents and 9 publications (mostly having to do with electrolytic processes, of course).I have served in two management roles. At Read-Rite, I led a department which developed electroplated ferromagnetic alloys and improved alumina chemical etching. At the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory I managed a Metal Finishing Shop which cleaned and electroplated materials for use in ultra-high vacuum.Skills: Electroplating, Electroetching, Chemical Etching. Process Development, Process and Equipment Troubleshooting. Process Control: SPC, DOE. Technical Management: team building, delegation, supervision. Chemical Analysis (XRF, autotitrators, stress measurement, surface tension measurement, gas chromatography, atomic absorption spectrophotometry), Metrology (profilometry, XRF, SEM, EDX).Citizenship: U.S.A.Website: https://sites.google.com/view/website-of-thomas-e-dinan-jr/homeCurrent Goals:1. Re-employment as an engineer or a technical manager in an industry involving electrolytic processes and/or renewable energy.2. Learning for technical vitality (I’m currently in the process of learning Python).

Sr. Chemical Process EngineerSlac National Accelerator Laboratory Jun 2022 - Mar 2023Menlo Park, California, UsChemical analysis and bath maintenance of electroplating, cleaning and etching baths in a metal finishing shop for ultra high vacuum (UHV) applications. Support development of new processing procedures as required. Ensure outgoing part quality. -
Metal Finishing Shop SupervisorSlac National Accelerator Laboratory Sep 2016 - Jun 2022Menlo Park, California, UsIn this position, I supervised a team of six technicians. We cleaned parts of various materials (stainless steel, copper, aluminum, titanium, tungsten, etc…) for use in ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) environments. We provided this service to the X-ray laser facilities (LCLS and LCLS II) as well as to the synchrotron X-ray facility (SSRL) and various other departments (TID, FACET, LSST, etc…). In addition, we electroplated parts with UHV-compatible copper, silver, nickel or gold. Other services that we performed were electropolishing, abrasive cleaning, and steam cleaning.I also supervised the operation of a waste treatment plant attached to the Metal Finishing Shop. The purpose of this waste treatment plant was to reduce the heavy metals content in the rinse water from the shop to below 1 ppm. We also treated more concentrated solutions (e.g. electroplating baths) by precipitating the heavy metals out as a sludge, which was dried and shipped out to a hazardous waste disposal company.I hired five technicians, all of whom performed admirably after sufficient training. In addition to the above technical management, I also managed chemical inventory and ordering chemicals and materials for the shop. -
