I am the Founder and CEO of Atomic Alchemy, the SpaceX of nuclear medicine with a mission to become the world's isotope supplier of choice.Essentially, we take rather unremarkable materials and "cook" them in a purpose-built nuclear reactor which changes them into exceptionally rare and valuable radioactive materials of which there are scores of uses, from eradicating cancer, to improving semiconductors, to remote power systems for deep space exploration. The world’s supply of radioactive materials for nuclear medicine is currently sourced from a vanishingly small handful of government-run research reactors, the newest of which is over four decades old. The ability to manufacture cancer-curing radioligand therapeutics are completely hamstrung by this old and failing infrastructure. The US consumes more than half of the world's supply of these radionuclides each year, but effectively produces none of them.Nearly three dozen isotopes used in a variety of other fields such as nondestructive imaging or industrial quality assurance are exclusively sourced from Russian state enterprises because we don't even have the manufacturing base to produce them domestically. Such is the recent history of access to space and launch capability, though I'd argue the stakes today are much higher today. It doesn't have to be this way. Atomic Alchemy is working to solve this by building the world's first fully vertically-integrated, scalable radioisotope production facility. This facility will contain the world’s first privately-owned nuclear reactors dedicated to radioisotope production since the decommissioning of the Cintichem reactor in the early 1990s.While some say that we're entering a new nuclear renaissance with the recent influx of small modular and microreactor companies and the world's first submitted NRC license application for an advanced reactor in 2020, we're playing our part in the non-power reactor space with the goal of providing never-before-seen abundance and access to these precious, life-serving materials.
