As executive editor of the University of New Hampshire's student newspaper, I led a staff of 25 to the publication’s first-ever National Pacemaker Award. Staying up until 2 a.m. putting out the paper twice a week with the staff is what made me want to go into journalism.

Fort Knox, KY

I spent the summer of 2011 living on an Army base. I covered Operation Bold Leader, in which college students spend four weeks training at Fort Knox. I wrote feature stories on cadets and cadre members, pitched story ideas, composed headlines and collaborated with photographers. My story "Showing up for training, in lime-green boots" was the only one.

After my sophomore year of college, I spent a summer living in the Hamptons. It wasn't the celebrity lifestyle. Two other interns and I were the only 24/7 staffers on a small wildlife refuge outside of Sag Harbor that had its own private beach. I lived in the backcountry of the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire for 10 to 11 days at a time, hiking in all my food on day one and sleeping in a canvas tent. Then I'd come out and have three or four days off. It is probably one of the most unique jobs in America, and it was an experience I'll remember forever.
