I have always dreamed of studying Psychology, and since going to university, my desire to pursue a career in clinical psychology has become all the more apparent. The ability to learn so much about my subject and then to specialise in an area I am passionate about is exactly what I envision my career path being, and my drive to gain experience in the field of mental health has only grown larger since realising this. I've spent a lot of time during my first and second year of university trying to find different forms of experience, not only to gain valuable time in the workplace, but to also discover the areas I am truly passionate about, and the areas I am not. I am strong believer in trying new things in every corner of life, as well as having the ability to realise when something isn't right for me. In October 2023, I began my year long placement on Salford Royal's hyper acute Neurorehab ward as a Psychological Wellbeing Assistant (PWA). I will be engaging with patients in 1:1 and groups, incorporating different activities to provide low level psychological support and encourage engagement in therapy. As well as this, I plan to make use of every opportunity I can get to learn from my colleagues on the ward and the NHS as a whole. I am hoping this will not only help me when I return to university in 2024, but also give me some much needed experience in the field of clinical psychology, so that when opportunities present themselves in the future, I can pursue a topic that I am not only interested in, but one that I feel I can truly contribute to. In the past I have taken many opportunities to further my clinical experience. By working as a healthcare assistant on the nursing wing at Springfield Park Nursing Home for 4 months, I learnt how to provide specialist care to both younger and older adults - an experience that was extremely valuable to me, as well as rewarding. Putting my knowledge into practice solidified further my desire to work in mental health and I hope to build up a large portfolio of experience in preparation for a career in Clinical Psychology. As well as this, volunteering for SHOUT - the Crisis textline - has strengthened my empathy, active listening and crisis management skills, and I will continue to work with them for the foreseeable future.
