Of all the things I have done, I most enjoy working with creative people and helping them accomplish way more than they ever thought they could! My approach to people/project/program/product/portfolio management differs from many PM professionals in that my goal has always been measured success -- completing the project as close to all client expectations as possible -- period. Although this seems crazy obvious, many times, especially with an organization that has no experience with formal PM practices (and often with a PM lacking leadership confidence), the PM reverts to a defensive posture where process and artifacts take on a supernatural significance, more important than the end goal of the project itself. I have seen many PMs let go and entire corporate Project Management Offices (PMOs) disbanded as they stubbornly held onto a static idea of project management, don't understand the concept of leadership through service, and turn out to be a bigger impediment to success than not being involved at all! My job as project manager is to heard cats as best possible, add structure and formalism only where it matters, rolling with the hits and dynamically adapting the project plan/schedule/expectations as the real world requires, and looking for unique solutions to interpersonal and interdisciplinary issues that often prove to be the sticking point with technical work teams. My background, experience, and skills are wonderfully diverse and I always crave a new challenge!
