Dr. Thomas Hutchens is currently a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Optical Science at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte (UNCC). His research interests include infrared (IR) materials, IR fiber optics, transparent ceramics, laser windows, high energy lasers, fiber-optic and stand-off chemical sensors, micro-optic fabrication, opto-mechanical design, precision metrology, and biomedical engineering. Prior to this appointment he was a Product Development and Metrology Engineer at Opto-Alignment Technology, Inc. He was responsible for directing all hardware research and development activities pertaining to precision lens assembly. He also has been a consultant for Medtronic, formerly Covidien, performing the design, fabrication, and testing of high-power laser-based surgical instruments. Dr. Hutchens received his Ph.D. from UNCC with a dissertation entitled, “Novel Fiber Optic Tip Designs and Devices for Laser Surgery.” He received his B.S. from UNCC in Electrical Engineering and Physics.
