Your family’s legacy will be defined largely by your family’s relationships – by who you are, how you engage with each other and the capacities you build within your family. A strong family can build (or re-build) a financial fortune. Yet, money itself can’t build a strong family.Relationships are like the proverbial mass of the iceberg below the surface of the water -- unseen yet determining the direction of that which is seen. When the relationships involve families who share financial assets, the complexities are magnified.Well-conceived business and asset protection strategies and comprehensive financial, tax and estate planning are important steps to take to sustain a business-owning family’s wealth. They are necessary, but not sufficient. Regardless of the planning to protect their financial assets, the family and the nature of their relationships with each other, with money and with themselves are paramount in determining whether the family’s wealth will be sustained across generations. Research* bears this out and so does my own family’s lived experience. My maternal grandparents were wealthy citrus growers and prominent landowners in Central Florida in an area near what today is Disney World. Our old neighborhood bears my grandparents’ name, as does a public park for which they donated land to the city so that Black children other than their grandchildren would have a place to play. Of all the wealth that my grandparents worked so hard to build, the only financial asset that remains today is the 6 acres of vacant land that was once their homestead. Why? Because of family dynamics, the unhealthy relationships that some in my mother’s generation had with money, and that generation's inability to get along and work together to grow their shared assets.After a 20-year career of groundbreaking accomplishments as a lawyer and 6 years of making philanthropic investments at the second largest foundation in the U.S., today my personal passion and professional mission is to help others avoid the loss of wealth and fracturing of relationships that befell my family.
