I litigate patent cases at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). Over the past 37 years, I have litigated 60+ ITC Section 337 cases, totaling 125+ trial days as lead counsel. Currently I serve as the ITC Practice Chair at Winston & Strawn and operate from the firm's Washington, D.C. office for quick access to the ITC.Over the past 15+ years, I’ve worked with the same core team of attorneys who have litigated large-scale ITC Section 337 patent cases in the cellular, telecommunications, computer, electronics, semiconductor memory, LED, and chemical industries. We work at the leading edges of technology where the stakes are high and competition is fierce--no place for on the job training!Our team is currently representing Ericsson against Apple in two ITC patent infringement investigations regarding Apple's iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple HomePod, and Apple TV products. We have been down this road before: in 2015, we litigated on behalf of Ericsson two ITC investigations that were successful in forcing Apple to pay for a license under the Ericsson patent portfolio. In 2014, we represented a major memory company in two ITC trials in the same month where we achieved a successful settlement on the eve of the scheduled decision in the case against Spansion. In the 2011-2013 “smart phone patent wars,” we represented HTC, S3 Graphics, and VIA Technologies in three ITC cases against Apple that were each successfully resolved after trial. And we represented RIM/BlackBerry in four ITC cases, including RIM’s invalidation of the Kodak “crown jewel” patent that had previously extracted about $1 billion in settlements from other smartphone companies in a prior ITC case.I particularly enjoyed my 10 years as an OUII Staff Attorney at the ITC where I made many friends, argued patent cases before all the judges, designed the ITC’s on-line Electronic Document Imaging System (EDIS), and developed a deep respect for government service.Outside of work, I report to Rebecca who retired from litigating pharmaceutical patents to enjoy the beach, befriend yellow labs, and serve as a hospice volunteer.
