After 15 years of R&D into how to re-create the best surfable ocean waves in a viable business model, Surf Loch was founded by Tom Lochtefeld to deliver the sport of surfing to your town. This 35 year journey started with the first sand-bottom wavepool at Raging Waters waterpark; grew to Wave Loch’s FlowRider®/FlowBarrel® in 200+ global sheetwave installations; then, Wave House® surf lifestyle centers on five continents. Starting in 1997, Lochtefeld patented his first hull-based design (or snowplow-shape) for wave generating technology. He experimented with a variety of wave technologies, with the pneumatic caisson technology the clear winner, both from a surfer’s point of view, and a business person’s. Advances in computer hardware and software finally made it possible in recent years to produce true hydrodynamic, mathematically accurate computer simulations of his new technology using supercomputers, proving out his theories and designs. A 40’ scale model and a secret at-scale testing facility proved the physical model. Thus was birthed SurfPool™: a surfing wave pool with waves formed just as they were in nature – through wind, pressure, and floor-shape – which could be surfed using traditional finned surfboards.
