Background in polymer science, magnetic recording disk drive tribology. Multidisciplinary expertise spans materials science, polymer characterization, surface chemistry, SEM, AFM, dielectric and mechanical spectroscopy, lubricant formulation, physico-chemical data analysis and modeling, creative problem solving in product development and manufacturing, and lab automation. Characterized melt flow and solidification properties of polymeric 3D printing materials. Prepared reports for internal and external publication.Additional InformationI have experience in method development and characterization of polymeric, organic, and thin film materials. I performed and/or utilized results from the following analytical tools in my work:AFM, SEM, FTIR, UV/Vis, dielectric and mechanical spectroscopy by DEA, TMA, and rheometry, ESCA, TOF-SIMS, nano-indentation, nano-scratch, surface potential and mechanical property imaging with Bruker ICON AFM, thermal analysis by DSC and TGA, ellipsometry for thin film and bulk optical propery measurement, polymer melt and suspension rheology, viscometry, HPLC/GPC, GC-MS, dynamic light scattering, ion chromatography, TLC, NMR spectroscopy, contact angle/surface energy, confocal imaging microscopy, and profilometry. In addition I constructed and maintained custom equipment for specialized measurements such as magnetic particle dispersion quality, scanning kelvin probe, developed ozone treatment process for chemical oxidation of carbon overcoats, and chemical passivation method to prevent tribochemical smear formation on carbon overcoats.email: tom.karis.1160@gmail.comemail: tom@tekdat.comwebsite: tekdat.com

TechnologistWestern Digital Corporation Dec 2014 - Sep 2016San Jose, CaCollaborated between the drive engineering department and media development to improve the understanding of media processing and solve recurrent problems that frequently delayed new drive product programs or caused field returns.• Discovered that the correlation between lubricant thickness modulations and disk long waviness arises from metal alloy disk substrate polishing. The waviness was mostly eliminated thus avoiding the lubricant modulation and head media spacing modulation which enabled 0.8% higher data density.• Invented a low-cost method for chemical passivation treatment of thin film magnetic recording disks to prevent hydrocarbon and water adsorption that causes head smears. This prevents data errors and warranty field returns in future products incorporating the technology. • Cultivated skills: Lab Automation with Labview, Data analysis with Matlab, Structural and flow modeling with ANSYS Structural and Fluent. Team player, technical writing.

Research Staff MemberHgst Jan 2003 - Oct 2014San Jose, CaMy research focused on new technologies to improve disk manufacturing yield and drive motor reliability.• Invented, synthesized, and characterized new electronic hopping charge control agents for fluid bearing spindle motors to prevent a nearly 600 mV drift in the motor voltage during operation due to thermal aging of the motor oil (US 9,368,150).• Discovered that ozone treatment during vent up after sputter rapidly stabilized the oxidation state of the carbon overcoat which improved the disk manufacturing yield eliminating the need for a 12-hour time delay in the manufacturing process (US 2013/0161181).• Developed and optimized the elastic properties of an injection molded thermoplastic elastomer polishing pad for magnetic recording disks, improving manufacturing yield by 5% ( US 8,192,249)• Cultivated skills: ESI Corp. CFD (computational fluid dynamics), Lab Automation with Labview, carbon overcoat surface engineering, surface chemistry. Team player, technical writing.

Research Staff MemberIbm Aug 1982 - Dec 2002San Jose, CaRheology of liquid crystal polymers, electrophotographic toners, disk lubricants, and greases, a new rheomagnetic method for magnetic tape and disk particle dispersion quality measurement, motor bearing and magnetic recording head disk interface tribology, characterization of disk surface nanocontamination, and disk drive motor grease and oil formulation for thermal stability and charge control. • Thermodynamic model linking oil molecular structure, viscosity, and vapor pressure (Trib. Trans., 43(4)758-766(2000)). The base oil structure with the lowest combination of vapor pressure and viscosity is now used in most all hard disk drive motors.• Chemical kinetic model for oil formulation design. Model-based testing decreased the test time from 5 years to one year. Enabled the first server class disk drives to operate at 10krpm with steel ball bearing spindle motors (US 5,940,247, US 6,194,360). I was rewarded by invitation to an IBM Outstanding Achievement Award event in Kauai, Hawaii.Cultivated skills-- polymer rheology-- magnetic particle suspensions-- magnetic recording disk lubrication and tribology-- ultrastable grease formulation and testing-- thernally stable and conductive fluid bearing motor oil formulation-- injection molding high density optical recording disks-- team player, technical writing
