About Thomas Bello
As a graduate student at the UW, I worked in Dr. Taran Gujral's lab in the Human Biology Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. My thesis was titled "Developing and applying systems-based approaches to kinase-centered biology". I developed and implemented a web app in R that allows researchers to make data-driven decisions about the selectivity of kinase inhibitors: https://kinhibition.fredhutch.org/. I also used a combination of experimental approaches and computational modeling to study kinase signaling and its role in various malignancies, including the late-stage prostate cancer progression and the migration and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma. Throughout these projects, I learned to apply my strong background in computational analysis to solve real-world problems and make data-driven decisions.
Listed skills include Matlab, R Programming, Microsoft Office, Polymerase Chain Reaction, and 7 others.

Computational Biologist I
Postdoctoral Researcher
Graduate Student Researcher
Wrote and published a publicly-available web application (KInhibition) using Shiny in R that compiles data from large-scale drugs screens to allow users to identify selective inhibitors for their chosen kinase(s)Applied a combination of computational and biological techniques to investigate the role of kinase-related signaling in the progression of prostate cancer and predict effective therapiesDeveloped a novel method to integrate known protein-protein interactions with a functional kinase inhibitor screen to generate a predicted network of kinase-centered signaling contributing to a measured phenotype
Extern
Through the MCB program at the University of Washington, I was able to participate in a Biotechnology Externship. For 3 months during the summer, I worked at Omeros Corporation, a local pharmaceutical company that specializes in targeting the complement system of the human immune system. I worked to develop an assay to be used in robotic high throughput screening for early stage drug discovery.
Undergraduate Researcher
In Dr. Ted Trouard's lab, I developed a semi-automatic workflow for analyzing the effect of a parasite known as toxoplasma gondii on rodent brains. This involved writing MatLab scripts to locate infected cells from histology image slices and quantify their location in a semi-automatic manner, using the Allen Brain Atlas of a mouse brain as a reference. The final product allowed for a much faster analysis and quantification of the image slices obtained. This work was done in collaboration with Dr. Anita Koshy's laboratory.
Summer Internship
Under Dr. Matthew Wall, I worked with a team of researchers to examine the effects of new multiband acquisition sequences for functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). This process included surveying the literature to establish the current state of this new technology, designing and implementing and experimental protocol to test the new sequences on two MRI scanners, and analysis of the data using the FSL pacakge and MatLab to implement a more advanced technique known as MultiVoxel Pattern Analysis. The results of our experiment are currently being compiled into a manuscript to be submitted.
Tutor
I tutored the student athletes in math courses ranging from college algebra to vector calculus, as well as in introductory calculus-based physics, both mechanics and electricity and magnetism.
