About Thomas Liénart

I joined the French Space Agency in 2010 as a propulsion space engineer. After spending roughly six years on the Microscope satellite as responsible for the propulsion system, I became manager of the "Propulsion, pyrotechnics and aerothermodynamics" office. I kept this position for 5 years. Since the beginning of 2021, I joined the CNES Launchers directorate and the CALLISTO project. CALLISTO will be the first reusable demonstrator developped by a JAXA/DLR/CNES joint team. My tasks involve strong interactions with JAXA. Before joining CNES, I worked with Snecma Moteurs Spatiaux for almost three years as a subcontracted test engineer. My perimeter included Hall Effect Thrusters, turbopumps bearings and rocket engines. I have followed all the different phases of a spacecraft development (from rough sketches on a paper napkin to in-orbit decommissioning phase). Hopefully, I will acquire an equivalent level of knowledge on launchers within the next ten years :^)

The CALLISTO vehicle is a flight demonstrator for future reusable launcher stages. The program involves three countries and their space organizations: CNES for France, DLR for Germany and JAXA for Japan. The first tests will be conducted in 2024 from the CSG, Europe's Spaceport for commercial launches. The challenge is to develop, all along the project, the skills of the partners. The department provides technical support to all CNES' projects as well as prepare the futur through ambitious R&T programs. We also develop numerical softwares. The main topics we are working on are : green monopropellant, electric propulsion (from a few watts to several kilowatts), pyrotechnics components, softwares modelling the re-entry of deorbited satellites into the atmosphere. Once delivered, I followed the AIT activities at satellite level and took care of the anomalies. At the end of the project, I followed propulsion activities in the Kourou Space Center, in French Guiana, as well as the in-orbit commissioning phase. All this was performed under the supervision of the satellite manager and the system manager (and the Head of the project of course). Show less

Numerical simulations internship. The aim of my work was to test a 2D hypervelocity impact code in particular in terms of thermo-dynamical behavior of the impacted materials. In a nutshell : if the impact is giving so much energy to the materials that the fusion point is reached, what is the best way to deal with this new phase ?
