About Thomas Lorcan Roberts
I never knew what I wanted to do. That was until I saw the first house go up that I was involved in building. Constructing energy-efficient, eco-friendly timber-framed homes for self-builders was the first time I was proud of what I did. Producing these prefabricated homes aligned my beliefs and ethics with my skills and experience. This is why I will be studying a Masters in Architectural Engineering: Environmental Design this year at The University of Bath.My first job in construction was labouring for a joinery company, whilst saving money to travel before going to university. During this time I fell in love with timber as a material, its combination of strength and natural aesthetic makes it such a unique material. However, I did not get fulfilment out of building luxury bespoke items as I felt it was not sustainable. I studied physics for one year at Durham but felt the content was too theoretical. After seeking more practical experience, I worked as a mechanical engineer with a company building brake lines and other parts for sports cars, tanks and motorbikes. I again felt the satisfaction of engineering materials to create something but also felt a lack of passion for the purpose of the product. It was then I decided I would like to study civil engineering and aim to be involved in projects where structures would be built to help improve society. After helping the health and social care sector during the pandemic as a carer, I worked as a woodworker for a company engineering eco homes. I fell in love with the process, from design to erection. I gained valuable insight into the design from the drawings on AutoCAD and decided I wanted to return to study and pursue a career creating sustainable buildings that connect people more with the environment around them.I'm now working as a Graduate Passivhaus Consultant with WARM: Low Energy Building Practice on a mixture of residential and educational buildings. I'm offering guidance to designers on a number of building elements, all the way from initial design and building form to collecting the required site evidence to gain certification with the PHI.
