I hail from Norfolk Virginia but essentially, I am a lifelong Rhode Islander. I was raised by a single mom, Miss Neva “Sunflower” Lumpkins. She is undoubtedly a guiding star in my life. Her love and undying commitment to my siblings and me have very much inspired me to pursue a career in supporting others. Currently, I work as a Lead Outreach Specialist for the Nonviolence Institute and I am a student at College Unbound. The missions of both organizations align with my own values, which are to create a local version of the Beloved Community through education and intervention. I love helping others however I can, whether that’s a ride for a client, or giving a homeless person a meal. I don’t view this as work; it’s about being a quality human being. Like many of our clients, I’ve seen and been through more than most - so connecting with them is organic. I don’t look like their teachers. I don’t speak like their guidance counselors but I am from this community and I know what I needed to hear when I was unwittingly self-destructive. This is the work. This is my passion. There is no real way to quantify the planting of a seed in a mind. We’ve lost clients and friends to prison and drug overdoses, but our team of outreach specialists continues to be where the youth are and try to help the community we love and support. Creatively speaking, I am also a writer. I use this talent to share my perspective, which is fueled by personal experiences and my organizing work in the community. I also write to challenge the views that I hold and use words to spark new ideas in the minds of readers. Most recently, I have been writing and revising a sci-fi novel for the last 5 years it’s a goal of mine to release it by the end of this year. I’m also putting together a small collection of poems that I would like to publish.
