About Thomas Hodgson
I believe mathematical modelling, data science and software will play a key role in making the world wilder. Through my work, I aim to develop insights that help reduce negative anthropogenic effects on the natural world and increase biodiversity. At the moment I am:• Quantifying the positive impacts of rewilding on a range of UK sites to help drive investment in ecosystem restoration• Building tech infrastructure to inform and support nature markets• Creating a UI to access Environment Agency data on water quality to inform wild swimmersI'm interested in applying my mathematical and statistical knowledge to make sense out of the flood of data to aid policy, create natural capital and help the world become a little more green. I work at the interface of biology and mathematics developing models of collective behaviour. How animals behave on their own is very different to the behaviour of a group—I work to understand these emergent behaviours by developing mathematical models of phenomena such as migration, flocking and schooling. I am currently working to understand the effect.
