This PhD project is part of a wider initiative underway at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) to investigate the role of hydrothermally derived iron on the formation of plankton blooms, which will be the first demonstration of linkages between dynamic solid Earth processes (magmatism) and major biological processes (oceanic primary production).

I was responsible for maintaining recirculation systems, monitoring equipment and overall fish health, including feed rates, weight checks, water quality, and fish density at the Saltas Wayatinah aquaculture facility.

Silviculture Technician, responsible for planting trees to the correct density, within correct micro-climates and other specifications that each contract required. This work often involved living in remote bush camps, working 10 hours per day, 6 days per week. Most days involved walking 10 - 20 kilometres over rough or steep terrain whilst carrying heavy seedling bags and in a variety of weather conditions from snow and torrential rain to 30+ Celsius. Hazards such as exposure to heat or cold, dangerous terrain, swarms of mosquitoes, bears and other wildlife were often dealt with. Work sites also included those only accessible by helicopter or boat. This is extremely physically demanding, unsupervised work requiring both excellent teamwork skills, independence and self-motivation.

Responsible for repairing and maintaining a fleet of 30 downhill mountain bikes in order to meet stringent safety standards. Also responsible for repairing, maintaining and upgrading privately owned downhill and cross country mountain bikes for customers and generally helping customers in a professional and friendly way, and with respect to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort's code of conduct.

In this role I assisted in, and supervised management, reporting and fieldwork in a variety of site assessment and remediation programs for contaminated sites in the Melbourne metropolitan area.I gained experience in assessment of groundwater, soil and surface water components in various contaminated land assessments including industrial sites involving significant fuel and industrial waste leakage. These evaluations were often conducted under audit by the Environmental Protection Agency of Victoria.
