About Tom Holmes
I study the sources, sinks and cycling of trace elements in the ocean.I'm currently examining trace element biogeochemical cycling in the Australian sector of the Southern Ocean as part of the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership within the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), University of Tasmania.Previously, I completed a postdoc at the University of Washington, measuring the impact of episodic glacial dust trace element inputs from glacial valleys into the Gulf of Alaska. I completed a PhD at IMAS, focused on the impact of volcanism on trace metal biogeochemistry in the Southern Ocean. After completing my Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Science) (Honors) I worked as an consultant environmental scientist for 1.5 years. This role gave me valuable project management and time management skills as well as technical skills in assessment of groundwater, soil and surface water contamination. After working as an environmental scientist and prior to commencing my PhD candidature, I worked in a variety of jobs in Australia, Canada and Alaska. This period provided me with an array of hands-on skills and gave me experience living and working effectively under extreme climatic conditions and in remote locations.
Listed skills include Ski, Event Planning, Groundwater, Environmental Awareness, and 20 others.

Trace Element Biogeochemist
Examining trace element biogeochemistry in the Southern Ocean by observing and synthesizing the sources, sinks and internal cycling of iron and other fingerprint trace metals.
Postdoctoral Scholar
Characterising provenance and bioavailability of aerosol trace elements into the Gulf of Alaska, with a focus on previously uncharacterised episodic aerosol sources from dry glacial valleys.
Trace Element Marine Analytical Chemist
Responsible for managing trace metal clean laboratory operations and users, including operating trace metal analytical instruments at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania
Research Technician, Co-Leader
Co-leader of trace metal clean sampling team – Euphausiids and Nutrient Recycling In Cetacean Hotspots (ENRICH) voyage to Balleny Islands region, Southern Ocean
Research Fellow
SR3 voyage data analyst, responsible for processing and visualising voyage data for 10 elements collected at 51 stations, including preparing data for submission to the GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product.
Phd Candidate
Working at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, I am investigating the impact of hydrothermal vents on trace metal biogeochemistry in the Southern Ocean. This PhD project is part of a wider initiative underway at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) to investigate the role of hydrothermally derived iron on the formation of plankton blooms, which will be the first demonstration of linkages between dynamic solid Earth processes (magmatism) and major biological processes (oceanic primary production).
Research Technician
Trace metal sampling team for GEOTRACES-SR3 repeat section voyage from Tasmania to Antarctica
Research Technician
Trace metal clean sampling team, GEOTRACES process study GApr07
Farm Technician
I was responsible for maintaining recirculation systems, monitoring equipment and overall fish health, including feed rates, weight checks, water quality, and fish density at the Saltas Wayatinah aquaculture facility.
Forestry Technician
Silviculture Technician, responsible for planting trees to the correct density, within correct micro-climates and other specifications that each contract required. This work often involved living in remote bush camps, working 10 hours per day, 6 days per week. Most days involved walking 10 - 20 kilometres over rough or steep terrain whilst carrying heavy seedling bags and in a variety of weather conditions from snow and torrential rain to 30+ Celsius. Hazards such as exposure to heat or cold, dangerous terrain, swarms of mosquitoes, bears and other wildlife were often dealt with. Work sites also included those only accessible by helicopter or boat. This is extremely physically demanding, unsupervised work requiring both excellent teamwork skills, independence and self-motivation.
Bike Technician
Responsible for repairing and maintaining a fleet of 30 downhill mountain bikes in order to meet stringent safety standards. Also responsible for repairing, maintaining and upgrading privately owned downhill and cross country mountain bikes for customers and generally helping customers in a professional and friendly way, and with respect to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort's code of conduct.
Professional Mountain Bike Instructor - Level 1
Responsible for providing a safe and fun environment to increase client's mountain biking skills/abilities using proven teaching methods and techniques.
Environmental Scientist
This was my first professional employment following graduation. In this role I assisted in, and supervised management, reporting and fieldwork in a variety of site assessment and remediation programs for contaminated sites in the Melbourne metropolitan area.I gained experience in assessment of groundwater, soil and surface water components in various contaminated land assessments including industrial sites involving significant fuel and industrial waste leakage. These evaluations were often conducted under audit by the Environmental Protection Agency of Victoria.
