I am currently working as a postdoctoral Bioinformatician at the University of Exeter providing statistical analysis to a project funded by the European Research Council. I have developed the data analysis infrastructure and system for this multidisciplinary project group. I am comparing bee population subgroups by testing for statistical differences in biological, genomic, and environmental data. To achieve this, I investigated the literature to identify the best analytical toolkits, and wrote scripts in R and bash to create singular datasets from genetic expression data and environmental factors. I am now analysing these datasets using statistical modelling. To interpret the findings of my analysis I utilise multiple sources including my expertise on the ecology of the species, literature on protein function, and discussion with other project team members. To ensure deadlines are met and work coordinated across the team I give weekly oral presentations of my findings supported by graphical summaries. Accordingly, all my actions are regularly shared and verified and consistency in the quality of the analysis is ensured.

Throughout my doctoral degree, I worked as a postgraduate teaching assistant (PTA). I taught undergraduates field, laboratory, theoretical, and statistical concepts. The communication and innovative skills I developed there have enhanced my ability to support the data handling, analysis, and modelling activities undertaken by future projects. My experience included supervising field trips, facilitating laboratory classes and tutorials, marking students’ assessments, and supervising undergraduate and masters’ dissertations. I met short deadlines for marking assignments. To ensure grade accuracy and consistency across the cohort and between years I created model feedback answers for use by future PTAs. My detailed assignment comments received very positive feedback from students’ course evaluations. I chaired the student-management liaison committee, collected postgraduate students’ feedback, summarised them to management, and related these meetings’ outcomes to the students. Achieving this required excellent oral communication skills when chairing meetings, and excellent written communication when presenting their outcomes. On the liaison committee, I negotiated better PTA working conditions, converting them from casual hours working to fully contracted staff membership, and consequently improved undergraduate students’ learning experiences.

Following my undergraduate degree, I worked as a research assistant within a group researching how climate change affected damselflies’ ecological range. I worked collaboratively with another research assistant completing daily field surveys and specimen collection for experiments I conducted investigating damselflies’ thermal tolerance and preferences. I regularly reported this independent work to my supervisor and other project workers. I needed excellent time management skills to complete the project’s objectives. I was commended for achieving so much in a few months.
