I am a journalist, an award-winning author of two books, a television writer (Umbrella Academy, Tales of the City, The L Word), and a former editor and director of growth at Quartz. I write about gender and culture (New York Times, The Atlantic, GQ, Esquire, more), and I am currently working on my third book, a reimagining of trans histories and new futures, for Scribner. My Lambda award-winning memoir, Man Alive, was named a best book of the year by NPR Books, BuzzFeed, Kirkus, and Publisher's Weekly. My second book, Amateur, a reported memoir about learning how to box in order to understand masculinity’s tie to violence, was shortlisted for the UK’s prestigious Baillie-Gifford nonfiction book prize, the Wellcome book prize, and a Lambda Literary Award. I'm developing Amateur into a scripted series for HBO, as well as producing several documentary projects. In 2025, a scripted podcast series I co-created and co-wrote, Bloodhound, will debut on Audible. I have taught courses at the City University of New York’s graduate school of journalism; served as an advisor to the Knight Foundation/West Virginia University journalism school reporting project, 100 Days in Appalachia; and supported organizations all over the world in their efforts to think differently about the stories we tell about each other, and why.
