About Thomas Theis
In my lab we develop biomolecular magnetic resonance tools to unravel the biochemical basis of metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. The research enables invivo, real-time tracing of important metabolites and drugs. To widen the classes of molecules used as probes, our research focuses on fundamental spin physics and technological advances for hyperpolarized magnetic resonance. Developed long-lived hyperpolarized-MRI contrast agents and published results in journals including JACS, JCP, and JMR driving the total publication record above twenty peer reviewed papers.
Visiting Professor
Theodore-von-Kármán-Fellowship:Investigated parahydrogen-hyperpolarized long-lived states at low magnetic fields upon invitation Prof. B. Blümich, Prof. F. Kießling and Prof. S. Appelt at the institute for technical and macromolecular Chemistry.
Graduate Student Researcher
Developed "Zero-Field NMR"Counter to intuition, high magnetic fields are not necessarily required for high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance. Furthermore, performing experiments in the absence of magnetic fields allows for a more "natural" spectroscopic state, governed by symmetries that are significantly different from those in high-field NMR.
Graduate Student Researcher
Theoretically and experimentally analysed mechanisms and symmetries of parahydrogen-derived polarization, resulting in discussions presented in four peer reviewed papers.Built NMR probes for remotely detected imaging of hydrogenation microreactors now routinely used in the Pines lab.Imaged and characterized catalytic micro reactors using parahydrogen.
European Graduate School Fellow
Studied termination kinetics in laser pulse initiated polymerization with NIR and ESR spectroscopy sponsored by the European Graduate School Fellowship resulting in two peer reviewed articles.
Education Abroad Scholarship
Synthesized limonene based β-amino-alcohols for enantioselective catalysis in the Singaram lab and presented the results in a talk at an undergraduate research conference.Synthesized and spectroscopically characterized gold nanoparticles for the study of electron transfer chemistry in the Chen lab.
Intern
Investigated polymerization reactions and up-scaling thereof for commercial mass production.
