In my lab we develop biomolecular magnetic resonance tools to unravel the biochemical basis of metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. The research enables invivo, real-time tracing of important metabolites and drugs. To widen the classes of molecules used as probes, our research focuses on fundamental spin physics and technological advances for hyperpolarized magnetic resonance. Graduate Student ResearcherUc Berkeley Aug 2007 - May 2012Berkeley, Ca, UsDeveloped "Zero-Field NMR"Counter to intuition, high magnetic fields are not necessarily required for high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance. Furthermore, performing experiments in the absence of magnetic fields allows for a more "natural" spectroscopic state, governed by symmetries that are significantly different from those in high-field NMR. -
Graduate Student ResearcherLawrence Berkeley National Laboratory May 2007 - Dec 2011Berkeley, Ca, UsTheoretically and experimentally analysed mechanisms and symmetries of parahydrogen-derived polarization, resulting in discussions presented in four peer reviewed papers.Built NMR probes for remotely detected imaging of hydrogenation microreactors now routinely used in the Pines lab.Imaged and characterized catalytic micro reactors using parahydrogen induced polarization.Examined vibrational and rotational distributions in products of combustion processes with FTIR- and FTVIS-spectroscopy sponsored by the Berkeley summer stipend for incoming graduate students.
