I led tutoring sessions for first year medical students studying for the cardiology pulmonology renal module. I also assisted a peer student in studying for the neurobiology module to pass the remediation exam. Although the student was initially disheartened by their score, I was able to support them in their remediation process through frequent encouragement, teaching time management skills, and problem solving until the student had successfully passed their exam.

As a research fellow in the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Summer Research Fellowship Program, I performed data entry, chart and literature reviews for breast surgery related research projects. I contributed to the development of a protocol for recovery after breast surgery for patients. During this experience, I was able to see and interview patients in clinic. I would present their history, illness, and findings to the attending and offer my assessment and plan on the optimal course of treatment. This opportunity for patient interaction early on in my medical school education offered me the ability to enhance my information gathering skills and improve my physical exam to capture an accurate image of the patient's condition. At the end of my research fellowship, I presented to my principal investigators, cohort of research fellows, and other attendings/researchers on the effectiveness of a breast surgery protocol in African American women.

In this role, I tracked patient healthcare through data assessment and abstraction of hospital medical records using Excel. I performed routine audits of patient metrics such as inpatient length of stay (LOS) and readmission rates of total joint replacement and congestive heart failure patients to ensure quality data input. I also distributed hospital inpatient admission notes to Medicare beneficiaries and explained to them their hospital discharge appeal rights under the insurance. I attended interdisciplinary conferences that focus on reducing readmission rates and inpatient LOS with social workers, RN care coordinators, physical therapists, and attending physicians. This work experience has given me insight into the way care had initially been reimbursed by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services with the fee for service model and the transition to a bundle payments model that looks at quality improvement as a measure for compensation.

I improved care of patients in the Critical Care: Step Down Unit and ensured safe quality healthcare. Through this work experience, I developed high quality bedside manner and the ability to establish rapport with patients through listening and communicating their health concerns to the nurse, changing their bedding, assisting with toiletry, and measuring their vital signs.

I conducted research for the Future of Food in Your Neighborhood Study (foodNEST) which involved observing and analyzing eating patterns and food shopping behaviors of residents living in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood of Cleveland. I assisted in tracking study participants while compiling data spreadsheets from the REDCap database to ensure accuracy and completion. I coordinated meetings with local business, school, and community leaders to organize participant recruitment. I also presented research study information to potential participants at local community centers. I performed food audits of various grocery and convenience vendors to gather data on food availability. I assisted the principal investigator and project manager in reviewing grant writing to extend the foodNEST research project which was later awarded a grant by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research. I completed multiple CITI training courses in order to interact with human research subjects.
