Thomas did the following for the Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) program:SQL database administration using Microsoft Management StudioVisual Basic .NET web application maintenance and developmentMotorola MC659B data collector troubleshooting and field supportThe Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) program is focused on preventing the invasion of ecologically harmful plants and animals to lakes and other waters in Colorado. Zebra and Quagga muscles, species indigenous to Russia and the Ukraine, are a particular focus of this program because they have no natural predators, produce harmful byproducts and consume useful resources needed by native species. They were first identified in North America in 1989 and have invaded most of the downstream waters of the Great Lakes in the eastern part of the US. Mussels attach themselves to water vessels with byssal threads and are transported through human intervention to other bodies of water. As a result, there is currently a multi state initiative to prevent the spread of these animals to the waters in the west. Colorado has mandated that all recreational motorized water crafts undergo inspection when launching at a state park. Inspectors at boat ramps input inspection information through mobile data collectors to a centralized database. Reports of this information can then be viewed on a proprietary web application called ANS Utility. Thomas is responsible for the maintenance of the data collectors, web application, and backend database.
