I have just completed my BSc(Hons) in biochemistry at the University of St Andrews achieving an upper second (II.i) classification. As my previous research placements indicate, I have a strong interest in molecular virology and therefore I am now undertaking a PhD at UCL in conjunction with the Pirbright Institute. In my current role I am characterizing the role that interferon inducible transmembrane proteins (IFITM) play in the restriction of avian viruses. The Pirbright Institute (TPI) is a world leader in research on viral diseases of livestock with a strong track record in translating this research into effective disease control. As a unique national centre the Pirbright Institute significantly increases the UK's capability to control, contain and eliminate viral diseases of animals through its highly innovative fundamental and applied bioscience approaches to understand pathogen and farm-animal-host relationships. TPI is the curator of 10 inbred and scientifically important chicken lines that have been bred for differing resistance to a number of significant poultry diseases. The Genetics and Genomics group is interested in understanding the genetics and evolution of animal-pathogen interactions, with the strategic aim of improving the control of viral disease outbreaks. The group’s main focus involves the study of the genetic basis of avian viral disease resistance. The virus-restricting IFITM proteins are under investigation in this study, thus contributing directly to the BBSRC key strategic priority on Global Food security.

We have established that chickens encode interferon-inducible transmembrane (IFITM) orthologues that restrict influenza infection in vitro. The aim of this proposal is to determine the biology and genetic variation of the IFITM locus in chickens, specifically the ability of IFITM genes and alleles to protect the host against both endemic and emerging avian viruses. The output of this project is to identify alleles that correlate with resistance to a number of avian viruses allowing poultry breeding programs to select the beneficial alleles.
This project focused primarily on influenza A virus and the role of the interferon response upon influenza infection in vitro. This work was supported by Dr David Jackson, a principal investigator at the BMRC at the University of St Andrews.
I worked within the Biomedical Research Complex. During my time at the BMRC I worked with Professor Richard Elliott on Blue Tongue Virus (BTV) and Rift Valley Fever (RVF).
