Thom Bohlen graduated in Architecture from the University of Illinois, USA, and began his career during the first energy crisis in the 1970s. Although the term ‘sustainability’ had not yet been coined at that time, Bohlen was already practicing organic architecture through the use of active and passive solar design, indigenous materials, climate driven building orientation and techniques that make effective use of daylight. These practices are now included in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, a certification programme developed by the US Green Building Council to assess the environmental sustainability of building designs.Bohlen has been involved in the design and construction of more than 600 projects in the US and the Middle East. For eight (8) years he was Chief Technical Officer at the Middle East Centre for Sustainable Development (MECSD), and Head of Corporate Sustainability for Pacific Controls Systems, based in Dubai.During these eight years he and his staff LEED Certified 56 buildings, primarily in the U.A.E. He is currently an Architect-Planner with the Facilities and Services Planning Department, and was formerly the Assistant Director of Facilities Planning for Housing, at the University of Illinois for the year 2017-2018.Specialties: Sustainable architectural design and planning as well as all aspects of consulting with clients and corporate partners on their sustainable development needs: and working with governments and global corporations, as well as the University Facilities program to develop sustainable development throughout the built environment.
