Thorbjørn was on leave from the Research Council and works on the EU Infrastructure Project "Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System", SIOS. Understanding ongoing and future environmental and climate related changes requires an integrated - Earth System - approach, in particular in the polar regions. While Earth System Models already have reached far in the integration process, observation systems have not been developed with the same systematic approach so far. SIOS envisages to fill this gap.

During this period, I acted as a Norwegian representative on a programme committee, in the world's largest research and innovation programme. The programme was dedicated to enhancing the career development of early career researchers.

Achievements include increasing the number of foreign students, reorganizing international students support to cater for larger numbers, developing a model for “Summer University”, supporting the development of a bilingual campus and increasing the number of institutional agreements with relevant universities in addition to having the responsibility for the international evaluations of degree programmes, making the university the most cultural divers in Norway. I was the institutional coordinator for several programmes like Nordplus and Erasmus.

The purpose was to develop commercial rearing of bumble bees to be used for pollination of tomatoes in glass houses in Japan.

The purpose was to manage and develop the counseling services provided to national and foreign students. The development was undertaken in close collaboration with academic departments and university management. During my time the number of counselors increased form 2 - 13 and a system for faculty to promote research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate work was consolidated.
